How To Create A Personal Brand
By Daniel Daily
What comes to mind when you hear the word “brand”? If you are like many of us in living our lives in the digital age you probably think of things like Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Why wouldn’t you with a company like Apple being worth $154.1 billion dollars? These are some of the biggest brands in the world and most of us have a good idea of what to expect from their products and services. We know what their logos look like and can detect when one of their commercials flash across our flat screen televisions.
But can more than big conglobate corporation become a brand? What about Beyoncé? David Beckham? Brad Pitt? How about Coco Chanel? Or Kobe Bryant?
Because they are brands too. Beyoncé sells out tours world-wide. People all around the globe know her name, they know what she looks like and we also know what her stage persona is all about and what they going to get at her concert. Coco Chanel turned her passion for fashion into a worldwide fetish for high quality design and art. David Beckham and Kobe Bryant through their excellence in their chosen sport are celebrated as giants throughout the world. These people have managed to turn themselves into brands just like those companies and have built up the same amount of recognition, trust, and exposure that they have.
And you can do the same!
How to Become a Personal Brand
If you want to make your own personal brand, all you need to do is to put yourself at the forefront of your marketing campaign, web design and message. You might call your website JoeBlogs.com and have a photo of yourself front and center. You can then tell people about you, what service you provide and why they should trust you.
This of course means that you need to be willing to expose yourself to a large audience. And that also means that in many ways, you need to strive to become the embodiment of the message you’re selling. If you’re a health and fitness guru, then you need to be in decent shape! If you are a life coach, then people will except that you have your life together. Or a financial guru that you at least drive a Mercedes Benz and own stock.
You also need to be bold, provocative and innovating. Nike got to its place of brand status by separating itself in the tennis shoe market. Their shoes become more than just footwear they became the passion and fire of the athlete. “Just Do It” slogan being the winds of change and in so dominant the marketplace and what you could charge for a pair of tennis shoes.
It also requires that you are willing to build up your warm market. Your warm market are the people that will follow, share and like your content. These people are essential to any brand. They are the brand advocates that announce to the world that your brand is authentic.
But even if you aren’t willing to put yourself out there like that, you can still build your brand with a consist level of excellence that is unmatched in your industry. That’s the key. You must standout not by a little bit but by miles if you want to be branded.
While there are some downsides to a personal brand, there are also a lot of upshots.
One is that it makes social media considerably easier. Once you have a personal brand, you are trying to get to know your audience personally. That means you can treat them almost as you would your own friends and that you can post the same kind of content.
Rather than needing to find exciting industry news, it’s now okay to post about your lunch – especially if your blog is about healthy eating! That means as well that maintaining an Instagram account can become a matter of posting some images of your day from your phone camera. Periscope and now Facebook Live, continues to allow brands to connect with their followers. If you are serious about branding yourself, you will definitely want to consider building up a following on those sites.
And all this is going to help you to build a lot of trust and familiarity with your audience. These people have seen what you had for breakfast, you clearly have nothing to hide, so they might well decide to buy your products or listen to your advice!
Personal branding on social media takes a lot of time and care. It will require spending time on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram responding to user engagement and keeping to a standard. Your fans and the social audience will except a high level of consistency in your post, pictures, comments, and tweets.
The rewards can obviously be tremendous. Once you are an established brand, you become an authority in your field. You can demand more in commissions, diversify your income potential with speaking engagements, make money off merchandising, write a best seller, host a Ted Talk and on and on.
