A Complete Guide To Snapchat’s App

.

.

Advertising on Snapchat without familiarizing yourself with its app is like flying a plane without going to aviation school: you’ll stare at all the foreign knobs and buttons, perplexed, eyes filling with panicked tears. Everything you see before you is unfamiliar, so you blunder your way through the flight, hoping you land safely.

.

Chances are you won’t land safely. That’s why you don’t want to begin a Snapchat advertising campaign without knowing the basics of the app. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Below is everything you need to know about Snapchat’s app.

.

.

What Is Snapchat?

.

Snapchat, founded by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown in 2011, is a multimedia app that allows its users to send ephemeral messages, images, and videos to friends. With Snapchat, you can perform three actions: send a message, send a snap, or post a story.

.

You can send a snap, which can either be a video or a photo, to anyone in your contact list. The snap is temporary, however, lasting from one to ten seconds, depending on the time limit you choose. Although the snap disappears forever after the time limit runs out, you have one chance to replay it. (This is a limited-time opportunity, so act quickly if you want to replay a snap)

.

A story works differently than a snap. While you send snaps directly to friends, you post stories on the stories feed for all of your contacts to see. A story lasts for 24 hours and, afterward, disappears forever.

.

When creating a snap or a story, you can use Snapchat’s filtered masks, effects that appear on your face, and geofilters, special overlays that indicate your current location in artistic lettering. Filtered masks and geofilters are two of the many ways advertisers can advertise on Snapchat.

Snapchat > Navigating the App

.

Snapchat, an incredibly minimalist app, can be hard to navigate, what with its meek navigation buttons and lack of directions. Here’s a tour of the app.

.

Front and Back Camera

Upon opening the app, you will land on the camera lens from which you can take photos and videos. If you want to take a selfie, you can flip the camera lens by clicking the flip icon.

When you take either a photo or a video, you can send it as a snap to friends, post it on your story, or download it to your library.

..

Memories

If you want to upload a photo or video from your media library, click the smaller circle on the bottom of your screen to access Memories.

There, you can view snaps that Snapchat automatically saved and upload photos and videos from your media library. To return to your camera, click the white circle on the bottom of your screen.

Settings

When you click on the Snapchat icon from the top of your camera screen, your settings menu will drop down. From that menu, you can access your friends list, friend request list, and contact list. You’ll also be able to see your QR code, which people can scan to add you on Snapchat.

Story

If you swipe from right to left on your camera screen, you will land on the Stories feed from which you can view yours and your friends’ stories. When you scroll down deep enough, reaching the bottom of the stories feed, you will stumble upon Snap’s featured articles, snaps, and shows.

Discover Feed

You can also find featured articles, snaps, and shows from the discover feed, which you can access by swiping from right to left from the stories feed. The discover feed features promoted content by brands and UGC (user-generated content). Publishing content on Snapchat is another way brands promote themselves.
